What Sort of Person Likes Ed Sheeran?

If you're reading this article, I'm going to go ahead and assume that, while you're dimly aware that Ed Sheeran exists, his career is not one of the defining narratives in your life. And that's totally fine. I mean, I know he won a couple of Brit Awards, but it's not like he's a pop culture phenomenon or anything, is it? He's just that spotty, ginger acoustic guy who's there, singing songs about drugs and hookers and other things he doesn't really understand, filling the gap that Jamie T left for people who find Billy Bragg too old and Frank Turner too punk.

But then over the weekend, it was announced that Ed would be playing at the Olympics closing ceremony next month and Twitter went nuts. We did a bit of digging and it turns out that this Ed Sheeran guy is actually colossally popular. But with who? Who are these people who have propelled a man who looks like he used to get chased out of parties as a teenager for getting drunk and crying on the stairs to international superstardom?
