PETER IVERS PARTY AT 92Y

Hey, tonight at 92Y Tribeca (the one NOT at 92nd Street) they're having this big thing in honor of

New Wave Theatre

and Peter Ivers. What kind of thing, you ask? A party kind of thing. For those of you born post 1980,

New Wave Theatre

was a segment on USA's

Night Flight

that had the likes of Fear and the Circle Jerks and X and 45 Grave playing live intercut with awkward interviews and insanely edited junk-montages that look like the mind-control video from

Lost

. The host was a tiny elfman named Peter Ivers who spent the 70s playing crazy harmonica-based space music that Jello Biafra really liked, opened for Fleetwood Mac at the Hollywood Bowl wearing a diaper, wrote the song the lady behind the radiator sings in

Eraserhead

, and introduced John Belushi to West Coast Punk. He was also good pals with Stockard Channing and John Lithgow. They all went to Harvard together. NWT came crashing down when somebody (most likely the show's drug-addled creator David Jove) broke into Peter's apartment and beat him to death with a hammer. Peter's Hollywood friends blamed it on the punks, the punks blamed it on the Hollywood people, and for one very strange moment, the LAPD tried to pin it on Harold Ramis. Anyways, it was all very sad and this guy wrote

a book about it that you should read

and there's supposed to be a movie coming along soon, but tonight… tonight you should go and see this. There will be clips and talking and refreshments and a Peter Ivers tribute performance by the Pink Gherkins, an NYC supergroup whose membership their trying to keep under wraps but we know at least contains one Jeff Jensen. Seriously though, put on an extra layer and go. You'll feel real "ahead of the curve" when that movie comes out.
