Mitski Turned One Direction’s “Fireproof” Into a Fuzzed-Up Indie Anthem

It’s the 78th installment of the anti-Trump ‘Our First 100 Days’ series.

While the world—definitely not just the Noisey UK office—got to grips with former One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles's new faux-glam vibes, a genuine rock musician with a real guitar was reworking 1D into something far more worthy of a second listen. The singer-songwriter's cover of the boyband's "Fireproof," released this morning as the 78th installment of the still great Our First 100 Days series, takes the Mentos-and-soda summer aesthetic of the original and shakes the bottle up for a full three minutes. In Mistki's hands, "Fireproof" is a relentlessly fuzzy track about love and longing, drifting into sonic feedback just as the lyrics loop back on themselves.

Listen to the full track below. Or listen to it twice. Unlike some other 1D-related music this week, it's not criminally long.
