Björk's Musicology App-Album Biophilia Is on Android Now

It's a mind-meld of art, stunning visuals and, of course, Björk's eclectic music.

You no longer need an iPhone to study Musicology 101, courtesy of Björk's strange genius tripped-out imagination.

The singer's acclaimed app suite, Biophilia, is now available for Android users for a cool $12.99, Björk announced yesterday on her website.

The app came out on iOS more than a year ago, coinciding with an album of the same name. It's part of the Biophilia educational program, which is meant to help kids explore the interaction of music, science, and nature, through technology.

"We are on the brink of a revolution that will reunite humans with nature through new technological innovations," wrote Björk, who's admitted she's "always been a bit of a nerd." Now Android and iOS users can join the revolution.

Or, you can just play around with a really cool app. Biophilia was lauded by Apple-using Björk fans when it first launched, though also criticized for only being available on iOS.

Eager to spread the word, the singer set out to raise a whopping $591,000 on Kickstarter to reprogram Biophilia for Android and Windows 8, a massively complicated and expensive task because of the app's complex design.

The Kickstarter famously failed. It was aborted after just a few weeks, and Björk admitted it was too optimistic. That's when a startup called Apportable came along, offering to port over the app more quickly and affordably. And here we are.

A hand-written note from Björk, via Kickstarter

The Biophilia suite consists of 10 separate apps, one for each track on the album. The navigation interface is an interactive galaxy visualization; as you zoom in, each constellation is associated with a song, and a set of educational games. Each track has a corresponding musicology theme and natural element:

Moon - Sequencers : Tidal patterns

Dark Matter - Musical scales : Dark Matter

Crystalline - Song structure : Crystals

Hollow - Time signatures : DNA

Virus - Interactive music : Viruses

Solstice - Counterpoint : Gravity

Mutual Core - Chords : Tectonic plates

Sacrifice - Notation : Interaction of the sexes

Cosmogony - Harmony : Equilibrium

It's a stimulating mind-meld of art, stunning visuals and, of course, Björk's eclectic music. The app is clearly innovative, though I'm not sure how educational it is. For instance, kids can play with an animated, abstract visual song of one of Björk's songs—the same one the singer uses when she performs onstage. That's cool and all, but will it help a 12-year-old learn to be a composer?

Expect to see more of these app-album combos in the future. Biophilia inspired Lady Gaga's much-anticipated app-album ARTPOP, which she recently announced will be released in November.

The concept is pretty similar: "The app itself is a musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion and technology with a new interactive worldwide community—'the auras.' Altering the human experience with social media, we bring ARTculture into POP in a reverse Warholian expedition," Gaga wrote in a Facebook post.

Here's hoping for an ARTPOP and Biophilia joint tour.
