Star Wars-ify Your Browser with The Force

Google asks: Which side of the Force do you surf on?

Google's motto may be, "Don't be evil," but they still let you choose the dark side of the Force with a new extension that will Star Wars-ify your internet browsing experience. Lightsabers replace loading bars, Stormtrooper or Resistance pilots invade Google Maps, and new The Force Awakens images and trivia blanket Gmail, Chrome, Now, Chromecast, YouTubeCalendar, and all the other apps whose current lack of Star Wars iconography is disturbing. If you have Android Gear, now's your chance to throw in a holographic Star Wars watch face.

If you've ever wondered whether the Internet was more light side or dark side (we're betting dark side), there's a crackling red vs blue lightsaber bar tracking which side of the Force people join in real time. Right now the Sith seem to have the edge—who can resist that black and red color scheme?—but it's still a "Never tell me the odds," situation. If you want to test out both sides, feel free to switch back and forth between the dark and light sides at will.

It's possible that you don't want to plaster all this Star Wars stuff across your virtual world, as it will just serve to remind you that The Force Awakens doesn't come out until December 18. Luckily, today's announcement also includes a slew of virtual reality content that will bring a galaxy far, far away that much closer.

The partnership between Disney and Google will also include a series of 360° videos designed by Industrial Light and Magic's experimental wing, ILMxLAB for Google Cardboard. Thanks to a similar partnership with The New York Times, Cardboard is now in over a million homes. Combined with the boundary shattering box office stats projected for The Force Awakens, these have the potential to be the biggest VR events of the year.

Check out what ILMxLAB is working on and some of the cool features you can give your Google below.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18th. Keep up to date on the film's official website.
