What the Hell is Going On with Didier Drogba?

Drogba and the Montreal Impact have had an up and down relationship this season.

Didier Drogba isn't traveling with the Montreal Impact for their MLS playoff game tonight against D.C. United. The Impact, according to their coach, Mauro Biello, say it's because Drogba is dealing with a back injury and "feeling discomfort." But that looks like only part of it.

Drogba, a former star for Chelsea, refused to play for Montreal earlier this month because he wasn't in their starting lineup. That was the loudest indicator that something hasn't been right. After that incident, he met with Biello and owner Joey Saputo and agreed to honor his contract until it ran out in December, but he hasn't even trained with the team since Oct. 16. After this most recent dustup, Saputo was forced to release an "Everything's fine" statement.

"The situation has been resolved to the club's satisfaction," Saputo said. "Didier has accepted to assume the role that the head coach sees fit while contributing to the success of this club moving forward. When he came to Montreal, Didier said he came here to win, and he still has the same objective."

Drogba had originally tried to get out of it because he wanted to go back to Chelsea to be an assistant coach there but Montreal wouldn't let him. He is one of the most successful players in the league and carries as big a name as nearly anyone in the MLS.

According to ESPNFC, Drogba responded to Montreal's decision by asking them to train separately from the rest of the team and to not play any games on artificial turf. For some reason, they allowed that and agreed to it.

Now, it's all coming to a head. It's a damn shame because it sullies everyone involved. Drogba looks bad. Montreal loses a good player. And the MLS gets another piece of evidence that bringing in stars at the end of their careers is just chasing ghosts.

Update: Turns out Drogba did make the trip and watched the Impact beat D.C. United 4-2.
