The Texas Church Shooting, Paradise Papers, and Our Russia Road Trip

On this episode of 'The VICE Guide to Right Now Podcast,' we discuss the gunman's history of domestic violence and how three VICE staffers ended up in one of the most radioactive places on Earth.

On The VICE Guide to Right Now, VICE's new daily podcast, we delve into the biggest news of the day and give you a rundown of the stories we're reading, working on, and most fascinated with.

Today we hear from VICE producer Allen Otto about our new three-part documentary series Russian Road Trip, which followed three VICE staffers on a journey to one of the most radioactive places on earth. Before the trio reached an old Soviet nuclear test site known as the "Polygon," they met Russian separatists, sampled antler blood believed to guard against radiation, and talked to the people who still live in the town of Semipalatinsk, where the government ran more than 400 nuclear tests.

"I think it's one of the wildest shoots VICE has ever done," Otto said.

Then we talk about new details emerging around the Texas church shooting that left 26 people dead in the small town of Sutherland Springs, including an account from one of the men who says he chased down gunman Devin Kelley after he fled from the church. We also talk about Kelley's history of domestic violence, and how he was still able to legally purchase an assault rifle.

Finally, we discuss the Paradise Papers leak that details the financial lives of the world's elite. From Bono to the Queen of England, the leaked documents offer insight into the shady ways the ultra wealthy have used offshore banking to avoid taxes.
