Watch the "Religion," the New Video from Vancouver Grunge Punks Diane

Inspired by “red/green mint,” “human hair,” “pressed pansies,” “bruises,” and “anxiety.”

Something about the Northwest air floating up into Canada has infected a real mood into Vancouver’s music scene. What’s with that grungy glow? The latest band to pop out of the three-chord sludge is Diane. The outfit recently finished recording an EP for Green Burrito Records and just dropped their video for “Religion," created by Crystal Dorval of the project White Poppy.

“My dad had just died when I wrote [the song 'Religion'],” said bassist/vocalist Mel Zee. “So, it's about the experience of being in the hospital endlessly while he was in a coma. A lot of my family who were previously atheist turned to religion to cope, which is something I just couldn't understand.”

Rounded out by Ben Goldberg on drums and Katie Gravestock on guitar/vocals, Diane pull in that dark, simplistic, and melodic approach to punk rock that reminds us of the Seattle days. Even when Crystal Dorval and Mel Zee were dreaming up the concept for the music video, Zee sent Dorval a long, long list of inspirations including “red/green mint,” “human hair,” “pressed pansies,” “bruises,” and “anxiety.” Mixed with the feeling of her father’s death, “Religion” escapes from reality and into the pinky tones.
