North Carolina has emerged as a nice little hotspot for upcoming rappers, and Deniro Farrar is a prime example. Following his 25-song debut mixtape in late 2011, the Charlotte-based MC's following has grown substantially. Now, he delivers The Patriarch II, a 13-track mixtape bulit on a foundation of slippery, ambiant beats. Farrar says that the mixtape was recorded during some of the darkest times in his life, and calls the lyrics "his therapy," but the music feels a bit more uplifting than that. It's probably due to the brimming confidence that shines through the beats, espeically in tracks like "Separate" and "The Reasons." Farrar may feel like he's struggling, but his focus pushes him through.
