PREMIERE: Golden Drugs’“Ghost Song” Comes With An Almost Lynchian Mood and Drama

The second video for the Oakland dream poppers is almost as bizarre and spooky as their first.

Oakland’s Golden Drugs just released a video for ‘Ghost Song’, a track off their In the Midnight Sun or Stubbornly Persistent Illusion album. Shot by the band’s vocalist and guitarist Drew Pearson the song’s name is appropriate for the surreal and mysterious video that is set in a forest at night.

Pearson, who also plays in East Bay band Twin Steps, has a knack of producing eerie/weirdo almot Lynchian like film clips that sit as a good visual elements to the band's dream-pop -goth sound.

We had a quick chat with Drew to find out more about the video and his process.

Noisey: A flare, fingers, a forest and a fucked up mask. Was there anything else on the work sheet for the video?
Drew Pearson: Yeah! We actually had an alternate ending where the sheet-ghost makes this big get away on a speedboat! We were going to try to shoot it at sunrise and it would have been this real triumphant happy twist but we couldn't find a boat that would go fast enough. That mask looks like it made an appearance on your first video too. It IS a mask right?I hope I’ve not just insulted one of your friends or band members!
Yeah dude you fucked up, that’s Scotty. He has become our shadow ruler/deity/muse and he kind of gets himself involved with everything we've been doing. He takes over bodies and he parties really hard. He's also really good friends with Death and he likes breaking things. He's also normally found chilling at the beach.

You were responsible for both videos. Is this something you look to continue to do?
Yeah, for sure! A Golden Drugs feature length is inevitable. Something terrible and beautiful that you can't dig out of your brain for a couple days. Two more videos in the next couple months for Golden Drugs and in talks with other bands for their own! You’ve said that "In the Midnight Sun or Stubbornly Persistent Illusion" is meant to explore the strange characteristics of ‘reality’ and the human condition inside said ‘reality’. How does this track in particular aim to do that?
The lyrics deal with two main subject matters, a ghost and the ghosts feelings from being alone and marginalized. It gets drunk and takes lots of drugs because it had this terrible life as a living person and is this sort of disgraced bummer ghost, constantly trying to escape itself. In the 'reality' of this song, there is a world where the dead hang out with the living and they have dirty human habits to escape their sad human feelings that never went away. Visually, the video is more about a girl morphing into a spooky sheet-ghost in terrible nightmares she can't escape!
