Let’s get one thing out there, right off the bat: There is no screaming on "Repine," the song from Pianos Become The Teeth’s new album, Keep You. In fact, there’s no screaming on the album at all. It’s a bold move by the Baltimore band for their third full-length. Over the last eight years, Pianos have built up a dedicated following with their perfectly crafted earnest and desperately shouted screamo sound. But now, at the height of their career, they’ve made a bold shift in their DNA and have quieted things down. Perhaps they felt they’d exhausted their tenure as a screamo band. Perhaps they wanted to distinguish themselves from the similar-sounding peers they're often associated with, like La Dispute and Touché Amoré. Or maybe they just wanted to shake things up to see how far their fans would follow them. Whatever it is, Pianos seem intent on proving that a lack of screaming does not equate a lack of intensity. The album packs in the same emotional ferocity, but through a different delivery mechanism. It'll be interesting to see how people receive their new sound. Some will be open to it, but of course, there will be those who cling to the Pianos of old. Keep You is going to be the album that creates a dividing line in the band’s career. Will you follow them to the other side?Keep You will be released by the Pianos Become The Teeth's new label, Epitaph Records, on October 28. Pre-order it here.
