Listen to Solar Bears' Exclusive Noisey Mixtape, 'Advancement'

A blend of styles and eras, cosmic, erotic, and a celebration of Ireland's ascending musical culture.

Making of

Supermigration

Solar Bears, fresh off of premiering their Supermigration short film (co-directed with Michael Robinson) over at Creators Project and in anticipation of their forthcoming album, Supermigration, gave us a mix for your listening pleasure. A blend of styles and eras, cosmic, erotic, and a celebration of Ireland's ascending musical culture.

John Kowalaski and Rian Trench had this to say of the mix, which they titled Advancement:

"We just want to highlight some of the beautiful music that is being made in our country at the moment and how things are changing here in the scene in terms of movements and sound usage. And we combined that with a couple of golden oldies."

The Advancement mix opens with the I Am The Cosmos track "Leaving/The Shift," a hypnotic dance-floor ready track that calls on '80s New Wave and House influences and bends them into the future. This should make believers out of any LCD Soundsystem or Cut Copy fan. Solar Bears then shift into the New Jackson track "The Nightmail," a low-end growler of a dance track that features creepy, spectral vocals and whirling arpeggiated synths.

Solar Bears then pivot big-time into erotic territory with the Minnie Riperton track "Inside My Love," in which Minnie asks an imaginary man, "Will you come inside me?" If we are to believe Minnie, the lyrics were about something more intimate than erotic. Why not both? Next up is Soft Machine alumnus Robert Wyatt's track "Maryan," a piece of experimental folk. Solar Bears' Rian Trench has noted Wyatt's influence on Supermigration, so its inclusion makes perfect sense.

They wrap things up with "The Woods," a track by Sunken Foal, who Kowalski considers "the best producer in the country" and a "hidden gem." The track certainly lends weight to the opinion—it's a work of top-notch sonic alchemy.

Enjoy the mix. Supermigration is out April 15 on Planet Mu.
