PREMIERE: Vulva Culture's Video for "Human Garbage" Looks and Sounds Better Than It Reads

Halifax's Vulva Culture get stick & poke tattoos to celebrate the creation of their newest video.

Sometimes all it takes is a little ink to make a bond, a philosophy Vulva Culture’s Amy V has clearly taken to heart for the band’s new video, “Human Garbage (in 6/8).” Off their new EP, Rolling in the Creep Amy V along with fellow artists, Charlotte Day Wilson and Eliza Niemi tattoo the famed time signature on their bodies while harmonizing in a gentle lilt that transforms the original track’s sun gaze sound into a more somber acoustic set. And while we wouldn't neccesarily advise DIY tattoo's at home, Charlotte Day Wilson seems to know what she's talking about.

“'Human Garbage', along with a handful of other Vulva Culture songs, is in 6/8,” Day Wilson explains. “The reason why we got the 6/8 time signature tattooed on our body is because it has a quality to it that just feels timeless. It has soul, it emotes, it has a life of its own and a long history. The versatility of the time measure helped bridge the gap between genres like country and gospel. By 1963 it had become an idiom unto itself called soul music, and legendary artists like Sam Cooke were having huge 6/8 hits that weren’t aimed at only white or black people but all audiences."
