Glaswegian record label and design studio LuckyMe have had the game sewn up for years now. Since 2007 they’ve curated a stunning back catalogue of post-everything bangers and done it in fine style too. With the label playing host to everyone from HudMo to DJ Paypal, Jacques Greene to Jospeh Marinetti, they’ve become synonymous with boundary pushing club excursions.
Edinburgh boy Bobby Perman’s been part of the crew for a while now. Recording as S-Type he’s dropped two classic EPs on the imprint: 2012’s triumphant ode to beatmaking maximalism Billboard, and last year’s Roc Marciano featuring Rosario. This month sees the release of his third, SV8. Perman was safe enough to let us have an exclusive listen to lead track, the Lunice featuring spooked-out crawler “Casper” – we spoke to the man himself as well, which you can read after the drop.

THUMP: How does a young Scot get into making neon drenched, haunted VHS rap?
S-Type: I’m from Edinburgh, but live in Glasgow. I’ve been doing music forever, but my older brother’s got me into rap music, DJing and production in my early teens. I moved to Glasgow about 7 years ago.
What’s it like being part of the LuckyMe crew?
It keeps me on my toes. getting to hear what everyone’s working on. We’re encouraged to work with each other. It’s a hugely inspiring crew.
How did the collaborative elements of the EP come about? And in a very literal sense, how do they work?
I didn’t set out to make a collab record, but it felt like a fun thing to do. Working with other producers forces me to approach things differently. I’ve done a lot of additional production for other people over the last year, so it was cool to switch it about this time.
I’ve been checking for Yung Gud for a minute. Last summer I tweeted “@yung_gud is a beast”. Straight after I checked my Soundcloud messages (which I hardly ever do) and saw one from him asking if I wanted to work. At first I thought it was in response to my tweet but he actually sent it a week or 2 before. We’ve met a couple times but haven’t had time to get in the studio. He sent me some crazy drums, and I did all the synths and arrangement. “Fire” is the only joint we’ve done so far but definitely trying to work with him some more. Me and Inkke are in the same circle of friends in Glasgow and we’ve been playing shows together for the last few years. I mixed a bunch of his tunes last year and we started doing music together for fun. “Ice” is the second track we ever made, which was all built around a melody he came up with. His ideas are mad unique, it’s a lot of fun blending our styles together. Me and Lunice have been pals for years through LuckyMe – last year I flew out to Montreal to do some work for his album. We’ve done a couple bits in the studio together since “Casper”. That one’s kinda a homage to Timbaland and Neptunes production from the mid 2000s. I feel very comfortable working with Lu, we’re fans of each other’s work – he always suggests things I wouldn’t think of.
What’s your 2015 look?
