Canada’s west coast hip-hop scene is being made delightfully avant-garde and surreal—at least if So Loki has its way. The Vancouver duo, consisting of emcee Sam Lucia and producer Geoff Millar, has been pushing the scope of the genre into some strange territories, as with their last music video for “Athlete’s World.” The trend continues for their latest release, “Spensive,” a taste from their forthcoming album Planet Bando. The video is a salvia trip with a catchy hook: “We’ve got 5s, 10s , 20s, 50s, 100s on the floor,” So Loki screams from the depths of a sweat-soaked hallucination. Monochrome dancers and the twisted heads of So Loki will haunt viewers. The psychedelic 3D animation and art direction was done by Chrome Destroyer, who makes all kinds of wonderful things. “When I spend, I spend it, ooo I’m independent,” So Loki boasts on the track.
So Loki gave Noisey a brief word about the project, saying, “This is the intro to the future of So Loki, we got stronger, Owake Records got stronger, and it’s time for a takeover. Planet Bando out May 25 and we already working on Planet Bando 2.”
