Are you afraid of aliens?
I sure as hell am. When I was growing up, my dad used to point out my bedroom window at the flashing red light from a nearby phone tower and tell me that it was a UFO. It sounds silly in retrospect, but when you’re five years old and still vaguely concerned about the monsters under your bed, it’s not exactly a comforting thought to dwell upon when you’re trying to drift off to sleep. I’ve been skeeved out by the notion of interstellar neighbors ever since (thanks, Dad) so this new video for “The 6th Passenger is Death” from Chicago’s The Atlas Moth sent more than a few chills down my spine, not least because it’s so frighteningly well done.

It looks like a big-budget sci-fi disaster flick, and the fact that it’s soundtracked by roaring psychedelic doom instead of generic ambient music ramps up the intensity in an already nail-biting scenario. Shot in LA and Chicago, tt’s the band’s second collaboration with filmmaker Ryan Oliver’s Deathblow Productions. Oliver also created a short film for 2011 “Your Calm Waters,” which is also well worth seeing.
Chicago locals and longtime fans will spot a few easter eggs scattered throughout “The 6th Passenger is Death” (keep an eye out for James Kimball from The Jesus Lizard) and the song itself is taken from an upcoming split seven-inch with Noisey noise rock faves KEN Mode. Preorder the split from Init Records, and watch an exclusive premiere of “The 6th Passenger is Death” below:
The Atlas Moth will be hitting the road with Vattnet Viskar in August, too—you’d be a fool to miss ’em.
