The pope can’t stop roasting Donald Trump

The leader of the Catholic Church and the leader of the free world have been trading barbs since the 2016 campaign season over issues like immigration, capitalism, and climate change. We rounded them up after Pope Francis’ latest, on Sunday.

THE POPE ON DONALD TRUMP

On DACA:

When the pope was heading home to the Vatican after a five-day trip to Colombia, he told reporters aboard the papal plane that President Trump’s decision to let DACA expire in six months indicates he might not actually be pro-life.

“I hope they rethink it a bit,” the pope said of the newly announced plan to end the program that allows the children of undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States. “Because I heard the U.S. president speak. He presents himself as a man who is pro-life. If he is a good pro-life believer, he must understand that family is the cradle of life and one must defend its unity.”

On climate change (subliminally):

In the same conversation, Francis also launched into what some interpret as a thinly veiled attack on Trump for pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord in June.

“Man is stupid, the bible said,” the pope quoted from a psalm, when speaking about leaders who denied climate change. “It’s like that, when you don’t want to see, you don’t see.”

And once they make up their minds, Francis continued, “history will judge the decisions.”

Trump didn’t respond to either of those remarks, but he had a lot going on, managing the administration’s response to the back-to-back storms buffeting the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean.

On the border wall:

The pope has called Trump out on immigration before. In 2016, during the presidential campaign, Francis — again on his plane — took issue with the then-candidate over his proposal to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel.”

Naturally, Trump clapped back, calling the pope’s comments “disgraceful” in a statement.

TRUMP ON THE POPE

On the pope’s criticism of capitalism:

When asked in 2015 about the pope’s criticisms of inequality and capitalism, Trump said he’d try to “scare” Francis.

“I’d say ISIS wants to get you,” Trump told CNN’s Chris Cuomo. “I’m going to have to scare the pope.”

On trying to spook the Vatican:

He really didn’t let the ISIS thing go.

In 2016, he took the threat even further, telling a crowd, “If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’ ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president.”

Just Look at These Buddies

Trump and the pope looked…nonplussed when they met face-to-face in May at the Vatican, compared with other visits between the pope and heads of state.
