This Interactive Fretboard Map Is A Music Nerd’s Playground

Have at least a G/C/D chord-level knowledge of guitar? Ever pick up a Guitar Hero controller? Then you know the face-palming frustration of explaining to your gloating gamer nerd friends that no, pressing down brightly-colored plastic buttons—no matter how maniacally—doesn’t actually translate into any kind of practical musicianship.

Forgoing Fisher Price whammy bars and ***STAR POWER***, programmer Joe Cannatti created a script that scrubbed the Internet, collecting data from thousands of guitar tabs to create a series of artist-specific fretboard heatmaps. Select from a list of artists like Slayer, Steve Vai, Eric Claption, and Green Day to track their favorite frets, weariest digits, and which strings were coated with the most finger gunk, and you’ll find that (hopefully unsurprisingly) Jimmy Page did a lot more during those Zeppelin solos than hold down red and yellow for 45 seconds.
