Truth And Wear

What are you two wearing right now?
March 2, 2010, 12:00am

AREA 51—Auckland

Rachel and Elizabeth

Vice: What are you two wearing right now?

Elizabeth:

I’m wearing a Bassike dress with a white Sass and Bide knit over the top and Rachel’s wearing a Sass and Bide dress.

Would you be so kind as to share with us your fashion predictions for 2010?

I think it’ll be lots of black mixed with pastels. There’s a lot of great knitwear coming through too, which is exciting. I also think that preppy style khaki pants are going to be big and that girls will be wearing them with runners and a button up shirt.

Can you reel off some local labels you predict doing great things this year?

Sure can. I think that Stolen Girlriends Club’s stuff is just getting better and better, as is the Lonely Hearts stuff. The new Huffer and Miss Crab pieces are really cute too.

Do you have a funny customer story you can share?

Well, this girl left her underwear in the change room once and came back to get it about ten minutes later.

Ew. Ok, now this is a game of Truth and Wear, which means that you have to answer a question you’d probably prefer not to. So, here goes: What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to a guy?

I cheated on a boyfriend once.

Mean! Can you elaborate?

I’d prefer not to.

Well that’s not how Truth and Wear works.

But I really don’t want to talk about it.

Ok, but that’s officially no fun.

MADE—Auckland
Maddy Vice: What’s that dress you’re wearing?
Maddy: This is the MAW Yves Frilly Dress. It’s real pretty. What do you like to smell of?
Oh, I just brought a new perfume actually, the Comme des Garçons and Stephen Jones collaboration—it is THE most beautiful thing I’ve ever smelt… of. What are your predictions fashion-wise for 2010?
3D glasses. That’s a safe bet. What are some labels from your neck of the woods you predict doing great things this year?
Ingrid Starnes is a really lovely new label we’ve just started stocking. It has a beautiful, unique femininity to it and the designer is really lovely too, which is always important. Whose music graced the store’s speakers today?
We’ve been playing the new Beach House album quite a bit as well as The Almighty Defenders and a lot of 90s grunge, like Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and The Pixies. Also some Patti Smith and Brother Ali. Anything goes really. Ok, it’s truth time. Let’s go with; what’s something you wrote in a diary once that you hoped no one would ever know about?
That I got busted shoplifting disposable razors from Woolworths when I was 11 because I wasn’t allowed to shave my legs until I was 13. I was served a trespass notice from there for 2 years. It was a really big deal at the time.

Phoebe

Vice: What have you chosen to cover your bits with today?

Phoebe:

Today I’ve gone with a Bassike dress and a Gary Bigeni cardigan.

Can you pretend you have a ball made of crystal that tells you what’s going to be big in fashion for the rest of the year?

I think that everything will be made of leather—over the knee boots, scarves, bags, belts, you name it.

Leather pants?

I think you know if you can pull off leather pants.

Local labels you predict doing great things this year?

I think Gary Bigeni and Bassike always do beautiful things. Josh Goot is continually pushing the boundaries in terms of his prints and silhouettes. I always find Therese Rawsthorne’s things beautiful and perfectly deconstructed. Oh and Romance Was Born is another one that’s always exciting to open when it comes in. It’s like Christmas.

What music did you play in the store today?

Today we had Jimi Hendrix, The XX, The Beatles, Tame Impala, The Cure and New Order.

Ok, it’s time to tell the truth and we’re going to give you the easy one of the bunch here. What’s the worst pair of underwear you own?

I have this really bad pair that give me really bad wedgies. No matter what I have on they just end up riding up there. Total hungry bum undies.

INCU—Sydney
Francis and Ryan Vice: What are you lads wearing today?
Francis: I’m wearing a Band of Outsiders “This is Not a Polo Shirt” polo shirt, which is so ironic, an APC parka, Henrik Vibskov shorts and Vans. Ryan is wearing a Band of Outsiders shirt and Henrik Vibskov shorts. What are you reading?
The Beach by Alex Garland. What do you like to smell of?
Chanel, Egoiste. And what can we expect to see people getting around in for the rest of the year?
I think there will be a shift back to colourful streetwear and to a kind of collegiate or preppy look and it’s likely to involve parkas and windbreakers. The ranges we stock have been quite safe over the past few years but now it’s all colour, colour, colour. Which designers making things locally are you digging?
We really like Romance Was Born and have done quite a few art projects with them over the years. PAM and Rittenhouse are both really solid labels also. What’s the most public place you’ve ever done it?
Oh man, I really can’t answer that. Well, not answering shouldn’t be an option but because I’m feeling generous, I’ll give you another. What’s the meanest thing you’ve ever done to a girl?
I dacked the biggest girl in my grade during sports class because I’d heard she liked me a few days earlier. Not one of my prouder moments.

Jess and Ben

Vice: You guys look nice. What you got on?

Ben:

I’m wearing a Vanishing Elephant Jacket, PAM cap and shoes and Chronicle of Never pants. Jess is wearing a PAM dress and jacket.

What are you reading?

I don’t read—I’ve never read a book.

I can tell that you are, but are you serious?

I read magazines.

Yikes. What music did you play in the shop today?

PJ Harvey, The Pixies and Radiohead.

Local labels to watch?

PAM is always a favourite. Vanishing Elephant is good. Complex Geometries are awesome and redefine what to do with a basic t-shirt. Beat Poet do a really nice, reliable tailored shirt that you can dress up. Romance was Born are great and Asuza of course.

Ok, the time of reckoning is now. What is your wildest sexual fantasy?

Jess and Ben: We’re not answering that.

Did no one play this game as a kid? Ok, Jess, what’s the most public place you’ve ever done it?

Jess: I never kiss and tell.

For crying out loud. Ben, what’s the meanest thing you’ve ever done to someone?

Ben: I punched a guy in the face for flirting with me once. I’m not proud of that.

That’s a bit more like it, thanks.

ALICE EUPHEMIA—Melbourne
Victoria and Karen Vice: Can you please break down into individual pieces what you’re wearing today.
Karen: I’m wearing an Arnsdorf jumpsuit, Prada boots and Julia DeVille bracelet. Victoria has on Romance Was Born leggings, a One Trick Pony jumper and dress and Julia DeVille necklace. Whose words are you reading?
Oscar Wilde’s, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Do you have an odor of choice?
I like the smell of flowers and seaweed. My favourite perfume makes some of my friends angry because they say it’s too much, but I still like the original Agent Provocateur. You guys only stock Australian labels so can you tell us some of the rising stars.
Mel Bower is my hot tip, TV is always amazing, Therese Rawsthorne, Gary Bigeni, Dhini and anyone else represented at our store really. Do your customers ever surprise you?
I always like it when boys come in looking for something for their girlfriends and start describing them so we can help them choose the best gift. The best description so far is, ‘She’s really dreamy’. Ok, we’ve learnt that people like talking about how mean they are more than how sexy they are so, what’s the meanest thing you’ve ever done to a guy?
I once told a guy that he was bad for my brand.
