Word's just officially getting out that Chief Bodega's shutting down for a while, since Saturday night the cops busted their party just as it was closing down. There were only like 400 people there and they'd turned on the big florescent interior lights, failing to notice that someone had ripped off all the newspapers they had taped up on the front windows, and being a bright shining beacon in the middle of Broadway at 3:30 AM with human trash streaming out the door, it's weird the cops would take notice. But as it turns out, they have the luck of a leprechaun's nutsack…One of the cops had been walking around, kicking dime bags into a pile and when other cops nabbed and started grilling Bodega co-owner Andy Smith. That first cop yelled, "Bring him over here! Let him bullshit us while he stands on the pile." Other co-owner Ed Zipco says he still doesn't really know why they didn't arrest him on the spot. And they let him go with nary fine nor jail time. Close one, guys. Everything's canceled for now but they have a good lawyer to run all the paperwork, and apparently they've been approved so they're six to eight weeks away from being legally open every night of the week. We'll let you know when that happens.(Photos by Rebecca Smeyne)
