LONDON - IT WAS ONCE PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE TO GIVE YOUR SATANIC BLACK METAL BAND A HIPPIE NAME

Hello young squires, It's Uncle Rocky here again. This week I have a Czech satanic black metal band for you called Root. Gather round…

I can't believe I only found out about this band very recently. Root were founded in 1987 by Jiří "Big Boss" Valter, who also started the Czech branch of the Church of Satan in 1991. Anyway, this is pretty perfect early black metal. As this was released in 1991, on their long-player Hell Symphony, I guess this is early "second wave black metal" or whatever. Just listen to it. It's really grim and it reminds me in parts of the great Burzum, who I'm certain was in part influenced by Root. It's instrumental aside from a spoken intro which again, I can't really decipher. Seems to be backmasking of some sort, probably something blasphemous and Satanic and encouraging the rape of humanity etcyaddahyaddah. Hell Symphony has just been reissued on I Hate Records.
