Stroll on the Beach With Jamaican Singer Toian's "Ride the Wave" Video

The Miami-based singer is gearing up for her first release since 2015.

Singer Toian made a splash onto the Jamaican dancehall scene when she unexpectedly ended up on "Ice Queen," a song about leaving emotions behind by the genre's transcendent megastar Vybz Kartel. Before then, she was already making her rounds by blending elements of conventional pop R&B with dancehall, even working with roots reggae star Protoje. Since then, the Miami-based, Jamaican-born singer released her Retrospect EP in 2015 which had standouts like the 90s dancehall-influenced "Love It."

Today, we're premiering the video for Toian's "Ride the Wave," an easy-going tune about pursuing a love interest. "'Ride the Wave' was literally penned in my old room that I grew up in Montego Bay, so the tropical feel was definitely a reflection of where I was at the time," the singer said in an email conversation. "The inspiration came about from thinking back on past experiences. I'm always impatient, I remember looking back at a text I sent 'How fast can you reach me?' That ended up being the exact lyrics."

The video is just as breezy as the track, with Toian kicking back, enjoying beach air. "I want all the senses to be in sync when you watch the video," she said. "What your see matches what you're hearing, like being transported to a place where you can feel the cool breeze coming in from the sea and the sand between your toes." For the remainder of 2017, Toian is gearing up to release her first project since 2015, a project called Urban Island. She hasn't announced a release date just yet. Watch "Ride the Wave" above.
