Here's the First 'Warcraft' Movie Trailer

It looks bad.

Blizzard just revealed the first trailer for the Warcraft movie, and mostly it just makes me feel bad for actress Paula Patton.

In the movie, Patton plays the role of Garona, one of the orcs who will have to put their differences with the human race aside in order to fight a common enemy. In addition to their green skins, one of the defining characteristics of orcs is their large, tusk-like teeth. The other orcs in the movie, it seems, are entirely computer-generated, like Gollum from The Lord of The Rings movies, and they look okay as far as computer generated imagery (CGI) goes. I don't need another CGI-heavy fantasy epic in my life, but they seem fine, even with their silly tusk teeth.

Poor Patton, on the other hand, who's just in make up, looks like an extra from the original Star Trek with some food stuck in her mouth.

I know it's just a trailer, but it makes the movie look ridiculous. At best, it looks like one of World of Warcraft developer Blizzard's short cinematics, which are some of the best in the industry, though that doesn't mean I want them to last for 90 minutes. At worst, it looks like a cheap Syfy channel production.

It's weird because Warcraft has a really good director, Duncan Jones, who previously made Moon and Source Code. Jones said he was a big fan of Warcraft before he revealed the trailer to fans at Blizzcon, Blizzard's convention.

I'm a fan too! Compared to other video games, the Warcraft universe has deep and interesting lore. Maybe you can a good movie out of that. I hope Warcraft is a good movie. It might be! But this trailer sure doesn't make it seem that way.
