VICE Sports World News Roundup: September 8

Start your day with VICE Sports. Here's our morning roundup of the sports news from around the world.

Good morning, America. Welcome to the VICE Sports World News Roundup. Be sure to stop by daily for your morning headlines.

It's the 8th of September, 2015, and Sepp Blatter is still president of FIFA.

A big weekend in the sports world!

Let's start with the U.S. Open, where we had the first major upset: Andy Murray lost! World No. 14 Kevin Anderson beat the Brit 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (0). The Williams sisters are scheduled to play this evening. Will Venus keep Serina from completing her historic Grand Slam? Stay tuned!

Across the Atlantic, the weekend played host to continued qualification for the 2016 European Championships. You can read a rundown of how things stand qualification-wise here. In terms of big takeaways, just know this: The Netherlands sucks and Iceland rules.

If you find yourself wondering how the hell Iceland managed to qualify for its first major tournament, well, they have Lars Lagerback, one of the world's coolest coaches.

Then there's this:

One of my favourite facts ever. Iceland's goalkeeper directed his country's 2012 Eurovision entry. And here it is! http://t.co/bxjfC9IE2F

If you're looking for a more concrete explanation, I've got you covered: last December I put the question to Heimir Hallgrímsson, Lagerback's co-head coach, and a bunch of other people and then wrote this story.

Formula One experienced a sort of deflategate over the weekend. Lewis Hamilton won the Italian Grand Prix, but under cloudy circumstances. Both Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate were found to have under inflated tires. The FIA decided against any punishment.

In Spain, tragedy struck at a rally event when a car ran off the track and into a crowd of people, killing six instantly and wounding many others. A seventh victim later died. The FIA called a meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, to discuss rally safety.

The Australian women's national team has walked out of practice in response to a shitty wage deal with Football Federation Australia. I mean… very shitty. Here's how goalkeeper Lydia Williams described the decision to walk out to the AP:

"It's simply unfair to continue to expect us to make enormous sacrifices to play for Australia. For the past two months the players have been unpaid and have made every attempt to reach an agreement that gives the women's game a platform for growth."

Russian water polo national team player Wladislaw Timakow died while training (Link in German). Witnesses say he went under and just never came up.

The Rugby World Cup is only a couple days away, but it's already blessed us with this amazing headline:

"World Cup: England use brain power to solve problems"
