"Won't You See" - Watch The Debut Video For Melbourne's Newest Funk, Boogie and Synth Pop Supergroup GL

Watch the new video for "Won't You See" from Melbourne's synth pop, funk and boogie specialists GL.

GL just wanna have fun. The new musical collaboration of friends and musicians Graeme Pogson and Ella Thompson, you've heard them in other projects before, but now they're stepping to a fresh beat with a new way to walk. Newly signed to influential Sydney label Plastic World, GL are getting ready to release their debut EP Love Hexagon in September. "Won't You See" is the first single, sounding like an undiscovered gem of the '80s with its boogie, early synth pop and new wave styles. THUMP caught up with Ella to find out more about the new band.

THUMP: GL is a fresh project, how did the band get together?
I met Graeme about eight years ago when I was 16 and we have been great mates, playing music together since then. As long as I've known Graeme he has been a freak for 80's funk, boogie and disco. The 80's were a very fertile era. I am big fan of New Wave, Post-Punk and Pop of this time too. So I suppose GL is a combination of these influences. It was a fairly quick and spontaneous decision to start the group, we made the music that way too. We wanted to make music that was really fun to play. Sometimes things can get really full on and serious, so this project is an outlet to exercise another part of creating music. It is great to be able to build the aesthetic from the ground up, just the way we want it to be.

The video for Won't You See seems like a tale of triumph over self-imposed boundaries. How do you guys overcome obstacles to get what you want?
'Won't You See' is about laying it on the line and being frank about how you feel and what you want. So I suppose honesty is the best way to get what you want.

Can you talk us through the shoot a little as well, set in and around Bondi?
It was a fun day! We ate fish and chips and pranced around Bondi in the sunshine. Ellie Graham who directed the clip was so much fun to work with. A killa gun chick.

Love Hexagon is the name of the EP, and (coincidentally?) there's some prominent hexagon drum pads in the clip - what's the meaning behind the title? What can people expect from this release?
Yes glad you picked up on that! Hexagons are a prominent shape of this era. We chose to call the EP 'Love Hexagon' because there are six songs and also flowed with Graeme's original Simmons hexagonal drum kit. Genius!
