"Close Your Mind" and Experience Fairmont's Weirdness on the Dancefloor

Pixelated melodies twinkle behind searing synth leads.

After his stunning 2012 Automation LP, Canadian producer Fairmont is back with My Favorite Robot Records. This time around, he's serving up Close Your Mind, a collection of three compelling tracks that come laden with his many years of production and DJ experience.

Premiering today on THUMP is the EP's eponymous cut, an upbeat number with twinkling, reflective, pixelated melodies in the background, and searing synths at the forefront. Featuring new wave vocals stitched into the rhythm and a lush reverb resonating throughout, "Close Your Mind" is as finely crafted a melody as it is potent dancefloor remedy. Varied and vital throughout, it's a perfect fit for the always cultured My Favorite Robot label.

Fairmont himself has been producing on labels like MFR, Border Community, Areal Records, and Traum for upwards of 15 years. We recently got a chance to catch up with the peerless synth artisan who knows how to pair club functionality with real musical charm.

THUMP: What can you tell us about your new single?
Fairmont: "Close Your Mind" is a collection of weirdo, vocal club tracks. My last few releases were quite subdued and mellow, so I thought I would turn things up a notch this time around. It's dark and melodic—like always—but a bit more psychedelic and hypnotic than my past few releases.

How did you get involved with the My Favorite Robot Records label?
I met the MFR guys through my buddy Sheldon, also known as Sid Le Rock, a few years ago. It's been a great experience working with them. They're pretty much like family now! Needless to say, I'm stoked that this new EP is coming out on their imprint.

Where in the world are you currently located? Europe?
I'm based out of Barcelona these days. I've spent time in Germany and Netherlands as well, but in the end, I need the sun and the sea.

As for the million dollar question: do you miss Canada?
I do miss Canada when I'm abroad, but luckily I've been able to spend a few months each year in Toronto. I'm very close to my family and friends back home, and that can be tough at times, but I don't see myself moving back any time soon. I'm happy!
