Timo Maas Has Forged a Reputation For Brave Choices and Cinematic Sounds

The German DJ/Producer's THUMP mix further proves why he is a dance music 'lifer'.

For an artist in dance music who can only be described as a 'lifer'—over 30 years on the scene have seen him cross the lines from progressive house to progressive trance to electronica to techno—Timo Maas isn't resting on his laurels. The truth is, the enigmatic DJ/Producer is working harder than ever.

Not only is Timo booked at the legendary Time Warp Mannheim this April on top of gigs at Flash, Verboten, Stereo and The Qube Project, but he's also been plugging away in the studio. A collaborative effort with Martin Buttrich has been confirmed on the Desolat co-founder's #9414 album and he recently remixed a track from Hackman on Halocyan that's due in March, which features a KiNK remix on its flip side. On top of that, Timo's label Rockets & Ponies is rolling out a lineup of amazing music that promises to see the light of day over the next few months.

DJing since he was 13, Timo was a primary architect of the German rave scene's extension into Hannover and he forged a reputation decades ago for brave collaborative choices and cinematic sounds. His catalogue is marked by tracks with Cocoon, My Favorite Robot Records, Recovery Tech and Toolroom, as well as celebrated mixes dropped on Luciano's Cadenza, Loco Dice's Used + Abused and VICE's own i-D.

Timo's current offering on THUMP—recorded at Gewölbe in Cologne—highlights the effortless ease with which he morphs from one style to another in such a chameleon-like fashion, further cementing his ability to interpret genres in his own way.
