Bjork's Coder is Joining Her on Tour, But He Isn't Old Enough to Drink Yet

You may know that Bjork is a big nerd, but you are not yet enough of a Bjork nerd to know that the developer behind some of her gorgeous new apps – the ones that constitute her Biophilia album – is only 20 years old. And yes, Max Weisel, who started making apps for the iPhone at 16 and designed the very wonderful and free Soundrop app, did that leave-school-and-run-to-California-to-launch-a-startup thing. For now though, he’s on the album tour, swiping iPad screens on stage behind Bjork, 26 years his senior. At the Creators Project, Julia Kaganskiy asked him about the glaring age gap.

Which is funny cause before I had this reputation, it almost had the opposite effect. People would go, "Well, you're not even 20 years old. What do you know? You probably don't know what you're talking about." That wasn't an experience I had with Bjork but it was an experience I was afraid of having. And so the first six months of collaboration, I didn't let anybody know how old I was, nobody even saw a picture of me. I tried to keep from doing any Skype calls that had video. Eventually she proposed we meet in Iceland and collaborate and hammer out all the concepts for the app. It was cool, we all got dinner together the first night and I think everybody was kind of surprised that I was there, kind of curious who I was. I probably came off as somebody's son on vacation. But it was really nice, they really embraced it after they saw the work that I produced on the project.

Yes yes, Bjork also started her career of international stardom (with the Sugarcubes) at the ripe old age of 23. If you’re in NYC and want to check out_ Biophilia _live, Björk (and Weisel) will be in the city for 10 performances in February.
