This article contains some spoilers for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Escape from Jakku! The three simple words evoke all the excitement of another Star Wars protagonist flouting their bleak fate on desert planet at the outset of an epic trilogy. This time it's a girl, played by Daisy Ridley, she's accompanied by a black ex-stormtrooper, played by John Boyega, and the Millennium Falcon is largely made from computer graphics. But that's OK because those graphics are astoundingly intricate, as you can see in the Falcon Escapes Jakku VFX breakdown featurette presented by Art of the Film.
The video reveals how Industrial Lights and Magic created a Star Destroyer graveyard in the desert outside Abu Dhabi and a dogfight weaving in and out of the massive spaceship carcasses, but what's almost more exciting is how often J.J. Abrams and company used practical effects. Explosions, the moments the Millennium Falcon is on the ground, and a green morphsuit-clad dude pushing BB-8 through the sand at full sprint are just a few of the highlights.
