Viral Style: Tumblr-Inspired Fashion And Tag-Popping Tees

Scouring dashboards and the URL world to bring you a selection of fashion tidbits in digestible weekly portions.

Whether or not 'internet' is a style in an of itself is currently a hotly contested point. But the increasing influence the online world is beginning to hold over fashion—whether via Second Life-style lookbook apps (hey Proenza Schouler!) or Karl Lagerfeld lurking Tumblr for inspiration on Chanel's key pieces—is now undeniable.

Trend forecasting these days is basically just a matter of logging into Instagram. And the world of fashion, once the centre of a goldfish bowl to be viewed from the outside by all but a select few, is being forced to adapt to a digital terrain which favors direct engagement over aloof austerity.

These (relatively) early days are rife with the kind of experimentation that fluctuates wildly between inspired and insane, as fashion finally begins to find its feet on the web. This weekly column aims to bring you the best of everything that comes through our dashboards and beyond in digestible weekly portions, as we scour the URL world for hints at 2018 catwalk trends and the collisions between fashion and technology that might shape future fashion styles.

MUST-HAVE ITEM

Two things we're really into are logos and digital fashion, so this "Expensive" bomber jacket by Tumblr prodigy Wil Fry is right up our street. A cool thing about Wil's work is that quite a lot of his prints get made into actual physical clothing—an "Expensive" tee has already been produced, so fingers x'd that he develops the line. If you can't wait around that long (or you're after something similar with a little more texture), we can confidently recommend the tee (below) from Yard666SALE for a different take on the tag-popping aesthetic.

VIDEO LOOKBOOK OF THE WEEK

We don't know if you follow Zomby on Twitter, but if you do you'll know he talks A LOT about clothing on there. He put down his beloved Givenchy for a minute to soundtrack (and star in) the new video lookbook for C.E’s (CAVEMPT) S/S13 collection. If you're not familiar, C.E is the brainchild brand of Japanese designers sk8thing, Hishi and Toby Feltwell (previously known for their work in laying the foundations for BAPE and Billionaire Boys Club). The S/S13 video was directed by Rob Semmer and edited by Tim & Barry (dontwatchthat.tv), and features the kind of virtual reality retro-future green screen aesthetic we're suckers for. The brand’s selection of hoodies, sports jumpers, and military jackets showcased actually look pretty decent too.

APP OF THE WEEK

Does anyone actually know how Shazam (that app that works out what song is playing in the bar your in) works? Us neither, but the developers of the app have just upped things a notch further with a fashion app that can tell you what clothes someone is wearing, and where you can buy them. According to CEO Andrew Fisher (speaking to The Guardian) "We make it easier for consumers to engage with a brand or a piece of content they are interested in, without having to go through search engines, then mining the results." The thought of hordes of style bloggers braced with iPhones and ready to scan outside show venues every Fashion Week is, frankly, as terrifying as the technology is remarkable. You can count us in on this one though when the app drops, which is currently scheduled for "soon".

SHOOT OF THE WEEK

Unless you've been sleeping under a rock for the past couple of years, you can't have failed to notice the recent uprising of gay rappers. House of Ladosha are part of that scene, and we're really loving NYC brand OAK's new shoot starring HoL artist/former legal assistant Juliana Huxtable (above). Photographed by Zak Krevitt and styled by the label’s own Cameron Cooper, Juliana rocks a mix of OAK S/S13 and her own wardrobe pieces. We've literally been watching this GIF on repeat for hours now.
