While the rest of the art world is shuffling from exhibition hall to gallery and back again, taking in the best of the modern and contemporary art scene as part of Armory Arts Week 2011, we think it’s worth mentioning that Dust La Rock (the in-house art director for Fool’s Gold Records) is hosting his own show inspired by experimental sound collective and multimedia pioneers Psychic TV. The exhibition “B.K. Scum,” celebrates and recontextualizes the group’s sleeve art, videos, and random memorabilia collected over a 30-year period. As the declining medium of album artwork continues to be collaterally damaged by the digital age, we think it’s important to support the folks who are still championing this soon-to-be-forgotten art that once held such prominence in music history and lore. As DJ Nick Catchdubs says, “When people pick up a Fool's Gold record, there's a handmade quality to it…it's not some by-the-numbers operation.”While we will definitely be making pit stops at some of the larger fairs including the Armory, Scope, Pulse, Moving Image Art Fair, and Volta, La Rock’s show will be one to see if you’re trying to stay off the beaten path and avoid the masses. Check out the work here.In honor of the opening of Dust La Rock‘s current show, here’s a look at our favorite Fool’s Gold’s album covers, all created under his art direction.“Blau!” Laidback Luke and Lee Mortimer
Released December 1, 2009
The title blasts through the cover of this pop art-inspired album from just as forcefully as the beats blast through your speakers. A thundercloud of energy may look ominous, but don't feel threatened—the song is trancey, dancey, and, like good pop art, fun for everyone.“Day ‘N’ Nite,” Kid Cudi
Released February 12, 2008
As Fool's Gold's first platinum hit, Kid Cudi looks pretty calm. This cover depicts him as an astronaut in full NASA regalia, leisurely taking in his stratospheric fame.“Get Fresh,” Kid Sister
Released March 10, 2009
Kid Sister, the hip-hop/electro hybrid from Chicago who got discovered by Kanye West, sure knows how to get fresh. Fool's Gold has fashioned her a fittingly funky ride, complete with fuzzy dice and her signature scrawled in lipstick across the rear-view mirror.“Gold Ru$h,” Greenmoney
Released June 22, 2010
This debut from UK DJs Alex Phountzi and Leo Greenslade combines dancehall, hip hop, and house into a single that deserves as much circulation as the currency its cover emulates.“Golden Week For The Poco Poco Beat,” The Suzan
