Girl band trios. Yawn right? I mean, girl band trios have been making the US rounds since Britney was just a twinkle at the bottom of her mom's Bud Light. We've had our fair share over here too: Atomic Kitten, Sugababes [note: past tense] and, um, Soundgirl (?!) to name, well, three. But hang on a minute. What the hell ever happened to Mis-teeq?! Like everyone else, they had a mysterious fourth member before they "made it." They also had an affinity for jegging pedal pushers way before that term had even been coined. The third member was a total "Michelle." Hi Su-Elise! (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Shit, they even had the reality TV show panelist breakout star. So far, so totally un-scandalous.Where are Misteeq and why do they not have a Greatest Hits album (Garage Hits Vol. 5 doesn’t count). Not even a ballad album. Not even a SPANISH album, for fuck’s sake (come on, it was totally a thing once). Rather than wasting our time sorting out a FIND MIS-TEEQ search party, here's a bittersweet tribute of everything we loved about them, hinging on their first and, obviously, greatest single.INTER.Let’s set the scene. It’s Summer 2002. You’re at a BBQ wearing Miss Sixty pube riders, Versace blue jeans, perfume, and a pastel pink cardigan that shows off your latest piercing. You're looking totally sexy. The familiar sounds of siren beats start to emit from the iPod dock and you feel confused for a second. You totally thought that you put on Lisa Maffia’s seminal hit “It’s All Over.” A feeling of quiet satisfaction washes over you as Alesha starts spitting in that emasculated growl not unlike the sound we imagine she made as she was phlegming up the remains of Javine Hilton’s furry fedora. The familiar sounds of pure garage start to surround you. This is your jam. You take a glug of cherry lambrini. You're in total bliss, and Surprise Surprise has never looked so glamorous. In terms of marketing independent sassy attitude to the masses, Mis-teeq were pretty on point. With lyrical masterpieces such as “The world is nuts” and “Glass down, grab a man” who would have thought that two of them would fade into obscurity only to reappear five years later on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. And that the pretty one’s most recent career highlight would be being sat next to a leering David Walliams watching miserable adolescents belt out their best version of "Hero." By the way, she never did go out with Pharrell. IKR. With their phenomenally named album "Licking on Both Sides," and sassy ways with a low cut velour tracksuit I think it’s time we salute the legacy. To be honest, the sexiest woman on showbiz (stand up, Tulisa) has got a lot to thank them for….Read more girly pop stuff at The Mushpit!@bertiebrandes
