Late Friday night, JAY-Z released three bonus tracks that didn’t make the final cut of his thirteenth studio album, 4:44. One of those songs, “Adnis,” served as the initial trailer for the album when it was announced six weeks ago, with a snippet playing over shots of a shadowboxing Mahershala Ali. Now, alongside the bonus tracks, we have the video in full.
Directed by Mark Romanek, who also directed JAY-Z’s videos for “99 Problems,” “Picasso Baby” and 4:44 cut “The Story of O.J.,” “Adnis” sees Moonlight star Ali sparring with thin air before turning to a heavy punching bag held intermittently by Danny Glover. It’s a stirring companion to one of JAY-Z’s most unguarded songs. It’s still a Tidal exclusive but, if you’ve signed up already, you can watch the video in full at the top of the page.
