Fox Searchlight released the first trailer for its Jackie Kennedy biopic,Jackie, Wednesday, and it’s easy to see why Natalie Portman is already generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal of President John F. Kennedy’s widow.
The trailer gives us a peak as Jackie as first lady and the intimate moments leading up to JFK’s assassination in Dallas. From there, she begins to unravel behind the walls of the White House as Camelot crumbles.

“People like to believe in fairy tales. Don’t let it be forgot, that for one brief shining moment, there was a Camelot,” she says, referencing a quote she shared with LIFE journalist Theodore H. White following the assassination.
Chilean director Pablo Larraín focuses on that LIFE interview in the film, giving viewers an inside look at the fragile grief-stricken moments the first family experienced after JFK’s death. Peter Sarsgaard also stars as Bobby Kennedy in the movie, with Greta Gerwig as the first lady’s personal secretary, Nancy Tuckerman.
Jackie makes its US debut at the New York Film Festival on October 13 and will be released in select theaters on December 2.
