Sony’s E3 press conference started with slow banjo music that preceded a trailer for The Last of Us Part II. Like its predecessor, The Last of Us Part II looks like a mix of well-crafted story and brutal combat. We didn’t see any of the infected— The Last of Us’ fungus zombies—but we did see series protagonist Ellie murdering a dozen of her fellow humans.
Ellie is older and Joel—her surrogate father—is nowhere to be seen. She’s living a life, seems to have a girlfriend, but there’s something unsettled in her. The gameplay shows us why. She’s a brutal killing machine—stealthing through the environment, shooting people in the face, and cutting men down in a way that sometimes feels a little too real.
