Next week VIVID Sydney will literally illuminate the city with a series of installations and projections. Light installations by artists from all over the country will bring Sydney’s buildings, structures, and gardens to life, transforming its night time landscape into a colourful and immersive palette of shimmering patterns and effects. 

We checked in with some of the artists involved ahead of the event to see how their work is progressing. Take a sneak peek below.

Mountain of Light by Angus Muir and Puck Murphy 

Mountain of Light uses lighting effects to simulate an eruption that can be viewed from four sides. Over 3000 RGB pixels are distributed in the installation, with computerised graphics that can be controlled by visitors to create realistic effects. 

Light Rocket by Joe Snell and Kit Webster

Created in partnership with the Starlight Children’s Foundation (the charity that provides entertainment and relief for seriously ill children and their families), a giant kaleidoscope is housed inside a fifteen-metre high rocket featuring lights, mirrors, and sound. 

Vein by Louis Pratt

Vein celebrates the mysterious and alluring properties of crystal quartz, the abundant mineral that grows in the dark but holds, reflects, and amplifies rays of light within its internal chambers. Multifaceted seams of light run along the side of a building, reframing the city landscape to look like a glowing crystalline cave.

#Portals by Rachael Archibald and Kucka

Blur the lines between the digital world and reality as you journey through #Portals. Electronic musician Kucka and artist Rachael Archibald created their work entirely online, by collaborating over Skype and using programs like Photoshop and Sculptris to create 3D objects.
