After lengthy negotiations last week, Prime Minister David Cameron clinched the UK a deal granting it "special status" in the EU before a referendum vote on staying in the union is cast in June.

Cameron had to compromise on goals around restricting how much in-work benefit non-UK nationals would be able to claim while employed in the UK, but managed to get Brussels to agree on a four-year freeze on benefits for migrants as well as a move away from Britain being part of the EU's "ever-closer union".

The whole deal turned into a bit of political theatre, with George Galloway and his hat cosying up to UKIP leader Nigel Farage in their bid to have the UK leave, Cameron coming out in favour of staying and London mayor Boris Johnson finally joining the likes of Michael Gove and other senior Conservatives in siding with the Brexit campaign. Johnson apparently told Cameron he was picking Brexit by text. Now begins the relentless four months of politicking on either side.

Jason Dalton, a 45-year-old Michigan resident, shot at several people in various locations around the city of Kalamazoo, killing at least six people over the space of seven hours on Saturday. Dalton reportedly shot people in the car park outside a block of flats, at a car dealership and in a Cracker Barrel restaurant car park.

"There's no common denominator with any of these," Kalamazoo County undersheriff Paul Matyas said. "There is absolutely no common denominator … through race, age, anything."

Dalton reportedly may have picked up Uber customers between the shootings, and was taken into custody after a large-scale manhunt.

Trade unionists and students had reportedly gathered to protest in favour of free education and against funding cuts, before "gatecrashing" Howlett's launch of the South West's Britain Stronger in Europe campaign.

Once police arrived on the scene, and Howlett had actually realised he'd been egged, three people were arrested on public order offences.
