COMING BACK BOOK SIGNING TONIGHT

Tonight at Umbrage Gallery in Dumbo Mario Tama will be signing his new book, Coming Back: New Orleans Resurgent. There have been a plethora of fucked up images from New Orleans since Katrina hit just over five years ago, but Mario's are undoubtedly some of the most iconic. He arrived in the city two days before the storm and has gone back around 15 times in the last few years to take more photos.

Here's some photos from the book along with a bit of commentary from Mario to whet your appetite (if looking at photos of catastrophes is the sort of thing that gets your appetite whet).

Lower Ninth Ward

A victim is placed on an Army vehicle with other survivors in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Seventh Ward, September 6, 2005. Fire companies struggled to combat fires in the city with unreliable water pressure and communications difficulties.

Some of the last stranded survivors remaining in the Superdome wait to be rescued.

Pearlington, Mississippi, May 25, 2006. Willi Lee, 79, stands inside his home, which he hopes to rebuild. Lee said he attempted to ride the storm out in the house but was eventually washed outside by the flooding. He was able to cling to a tree limb for hours until the floodwater subsided. A water moccasin clung to the limb next to him the entire time. The eye of Katrina passed directly over Pearlington, located approximately midway between New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi.

May 10, 2006. Shanika Reaux walks through the devastated Lower Ninth Ward on her way to a bus stop with her children. Reaux said she moved into a donated, gutted home in the Lower Ninth Ward in February 2006 after FEMA would no longer pay for her housing when she returned to Louisiana. The water in the area was unsafe to drink and many homes were completely destroyed.

A funeral for three young brothers killed in a shooting.

June 10, 2007. B.W. Cooper housing project, also known as the Calliope.
