MATT CONNOR READING TONIGHT

Our friend Matt Connor, aka Wolfboy, is currently making a rare appearance in New York, on loan from his home in London. Tonight at 8 PM, he will be reading at Gavin Brown's Enterprise at 620 Greenwich Street in that in-between area that can be called Tribeca or the Meatpacking District, depending on how glass full / glass empty of a person you are. Matt's whole way of doing things is a true inspiration. He cranks out smart, funny, touching, insightful fiction at an enviable rate. His stories are marked by the sort of casually rendered deep observation that you see in writers like Richard Yates or George Saunders (and, if you note how different those two writers are, you'll get an idea of the range of settings that Matt employs). But then what does Matt do with his gemlike stories? He puts them in beautiful handmade zines. That's right, zines. The 8.5 by 11, folded-and-stapled kind. Then he sells them for very cheaply, or just gives them away. To take such carefully written fiction and distribute it in this way is almost a holy gesture at this point in time, when so many young fiction writers put the pursuit of an agent and a manager above all else. Matt reads tonight at the inaugural event of artist Oliver Payne's Safe Crackers series of screenings, performances, and so on. All will be oases of tasteful culture, but Matt's reading is our don't-miss of the week. Flyers for tonight and for the whole series below, as well as links to Matt's fiction in the
