NEW YORK - R.I.P. S.M.A.T.S.

Dag. This weekend, amid the mid-summer joy of this huge Saturday afternoon show at the Yard with Abe Vigoda and Oneida, local tunemakers Soiled Mattress and the Springs are honking their last bonk. We could generally give a shit about most bands breaking up as there is a literal buttload of near-identical groups forever waiting in the wings, but it genuinely pains us to think that, past Saturday, we will never, ever see Matthew Thurber scoot around stage with his saxophone. It was like a some sort of white, omnidirectional moonwalk, and we remain mystified by how he could do it and still have enough breath to play all the sax notes in their songs at top-volume. Dude's got some pipes I guess.
