Gianna Toboni sat down with Kai, a 6-year-old transgender girl, and her mother, Kimberly, who are featured on the VICE on HBO episode “Trans Youth.”

Kai is now in kindergarten, and is not permitted to use the girls’ restrooms in her school. We spoke to Kimberly and Kai about what’s changed in their household since the piece was filmed, and their reaction to the Trump administration’s recent decision to change the federal directive on bathroom use by transgender people.
