Brandon Moss got things going early for Oakland with a two-run home run in the first inning. Kansas City chipped away with one run in the home half and added two more in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. With Moss coming up with two men on in the sixth, Ned Yost pulled James Shields after five innings and 88 pitches and put in rookie Yordano Ventura for just his second relief appearance ever. Brandon Moss then crushed a home run to dead center field and put the A's back on top 5-3.
