‘Burning Sands’ is the Frat Hazing Drama You Didn’t Know You Needed

Starring Alfre Woodard and Trevonte Rhodes, the Netflix flick looks at life in an all-black fraternity

Burning Sands
Ever since seeing Todd Phillips' ( The Hangover) banned documentary Frat House about the brutality and reality of Greek system hazing, I've been obsessed with the dark corners of college fraternities and sororities. As an extreme non-joiner it's hard for me to wrap my head around why anyone would subject themselves to literal torture in order to live with 20 drunk roommates for four years, but to each their own. Of course there have been many, many attempts to capture this bizarre, brotherly world in film, the most recent one being GOAT starring Nick Jonas which actually lifts scenes right from Frat House. Burning Sands is Netflix's foray into the genre and it's the first time we've seen the lens turn to an all-black frat. Despite the well-trod territory, Burning Sands seems to have an exciting tension, with a fantastic cast including Alfre Woodard and Trevonte Rhodes ( Moonlight).

As You Are
Amandla Stenberg's latest drama is a tense, hold-your-breath, melancholic look at a group of teens in small-town America dealing with loss, friendship and sexuality set in the 90s. It's told, and retold through a series of police interrogations as the audience unravels the meaning and conclusion behind two gunshots heard in the opening scene. Stenberg is a rising and outspoken star who is already changing the whitewashed landscape of young Hollywood. Co-star Charlie Heaton (he played weirdo Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things) is her equally electrifying co-star.

Alien: Covenant Prologue trailer
This new Alien: Covenant trailer is fucking great. Setting the scene for the teaser we received earlier this year, this prologue gives us a peek at why this new batch of alien food is on a space ship careening into certain death. As early colonizers, James Franco, Katherine Watson, Michael Fassbender, and Danny McBride are toasting their last night in familiar territory as they prepare to enter cryosleep en route to a new planet. Unfortunately, they're oblivious to the horrors that already lurk very, very close to home. I'm hyped.

First They Killed My Father
Poor Angelina Jolie. She's had a steady string of box office flops including the disastrous By the Sea and was recently booted from a remake of Murder on the Orient Express. Her ability to pull rank with the studios has been in decline. But then she did that weird bug-eating video and now she's cast herself front and centre in the trailer for her latest Cambodia-focused Netflix documentary, so expect a rapturous reach for the throne. First They Killed My Father is based on the true life tale of Luong Ung who survived the Khmer Rouge years. It's told from the perspective of a young child and is executive produced by Jolie's teenage son, Maddox.
