You Can Help Legendary DIY Venue Shea Stadium Reopen

They're close to the $50,000 target they set on Kickstarter.

Shea Stadium, the legendary Brooklyn DIY venue and community project, endured a torrid start to 2017. Abruptly shut down on two occasions since the start of the year, they temporarily closed their doors on March 9 citing "increasing pressure from the local authorities." Fines and fees were racking up, they said at the time, and the threat of "serious repercussions" was growing too large.

This morning, the venue launched a Kickstarter, aiming to raise $50,000 in order to open a "more sustainable Shea." "Raising these funds will help us acquire all the necessary permits and renovations needed to make Shea more visible and more accessible," reads a statement on the fundraising site. "You'd help Shea pay for: renovations to pass inspection by the Dept of Buildings, FDNY and Dept of Health ($20,000), architect fees for drafting plans and filing permits ($13,000), fire safety training ($1,000), health and bar permits ($7,000), legal fees ($14,000)."

Shea Stadium started in 2009 as a recording studio and rehearsal space by day and a venue by night. They've recorded every band's set at the venue since, and offered their archive up for free online (it's great and you should check it out).

They're already up to $48,000, so it's just a case of tipping them over the edge now. In return for your donation, you'll be rewarded with anything from a curated playlist from the venue's massive archive to a full year of guestlist spots for you and a friend.
