Those of you lucky enough to make it to our Beijing Launch Event this weekend may have seen the incredible Memory Vending Machines installation by Shanghai-based media artist Aaajiao (Xu Wenkai). For Memory Vending Machines, the artist created a self-service vending machine that sold hypothetical microscopic nano-robots that could be used to create “memory zones” in the user’s brain. Aaajiao’s interactive installations are both wildly futuristic and rooted in ancient tradition and lore, making them a captivating mix of the hyper-modern and the familiar.Aaajiao (Xu Wenkai) recently released a iPhone/iPad app version of an installation he created last year called cloud.data.The app, which is available on the iTunes store for $2.99, allows users to manipulate the cloud forms and sounds using the iPhone’s touchscreen gesture interface. The resulting piece is collaborative and ever-evolving, not to mention a convenient (and pocket-sized!) way to view and participate in an art work.[via CreativeApplications.net]
