Get Charged

Swirling video art made with magnetic fluids.

Ferrofluids may sound like something you use to fire-up a grill, but they are actually solutions of magnetic particles suspended in liquid. Artists like Sachiko Kodama use magnets to manipulate ferrofluids and create spectacular visual effects. While the metallic trees in the video above look like the results of computer-generated imagery, they are solely controlled by the artist, her collaborator Yasushi Miyajima, and their magnets. We’re hypnotized.
