Back in the day before data was cool and any talk of ‘new media’ art brought forth only blank stares, Norwegian artist Marius Watz was designing flyers for raves based on the work of emerging techno-artists including William Latham and StelArc. Fast forward a few decades and a handful of months after a fruitful residency at MakerBot, to Watz’ spankin’-new lecture from Eyeo 2011, on the nature of data, the artists taking it to new heights, and the ever-emergent dimension that is software. Watz’ lecture is a whopping (but totally engrossing) fifty-minutes long, and more than worth the mental exercise. Just think about all the new synaptic connections!Below, the Eyeo lecture in full, and “Electroplastique,” one of Watz’ works in processing. Keep your eyes peeled for works by new lectures from fellow Eyeo speakers and Processing enthusiasts Aaron Koblin, Jer Thorp, Ben Fry, and Casey Reas!
