A 3D Projected Character That Responds To You In Real-Time

Projection mapping meets motion capture breeds fantastical results.

Every so often the practice of projection mapping gets a shot in the arm. Just when you thought the medium had plateaued, along comes someone to add some new trickery to dazzle us anew and make sure the medium’s in constant flux.

NuFormer, a Netherlands-based video mapping collective, and Motek Entertainment, mocap experts, have created a new form of projection mapping that lets the audience interact with a live character. It’s called mocap mapping and combines 3D video mapping projection with live motion capture technology for an interactive experience, so the collected crowds can casually chat with a projected form, in this instance a 3D digital character.

The character is a virtual space traveller from the future who holds court with the intrigued and amused audience, asking questions and generally hanging out. In a canny marketing move, NuFormer have just realized this teaser trailer for now, and the full video will follow.
