The VICE Guide to Belfast

We were shown round Belfast in the run up to an annual march-cum-sectarian battle.

Gerry and Alistair, two ex-Irish-paramilitary men from opposing sides of the sectarian divide, showed us round battle-battered Belfast as the city geared up for The Twelth parade. The annual Protestant celebration marches directly through a predominately Catholic, Irish nationalist area, which is basically the equivalent of repeatedly punching a man in the head and telling him he's not allowed to fight back. That would obviously be very annoying, which is probably why the whole thing descends into a mess of petrol bombs, bricks and riot police.
