Crap, while we were busy doing American things this weekend, we forgot to mention that Canadian photographer Ben Pobjoy was busy doing a show of his American work in Canada. Ben’s “Land of America” opened Friday at the Emporium Gallery, but it’s running for another couple weeks, so you should stop in when you have a chance and see all the shots he took on his recent 7,000-mile bus trip across the US and Mexico. In the meantime, we asked him about whether or not anyone barfed on the trip. See below for the answer—it just might surprise you…
Vice: Did anyone barf on your bus?
Ben Pobjoy: I don’t even know where to begin. People were throwing up on the bus right and left, and the driver had locked us all in during the ride, so it was just covered in puke. There was a rider who got on the bus in Indio, California who’d recently been lit on fire and you could only make out his eyes and nose through all the gauze he had on his face. He looked like a cross between Freddie Kruger and Jason Voorhees. And then there was this gang-banger that was a member of the Mexican Mafia that had the number 13 tattooed under his eye. He got initiated in jail after racially stabbing someone in the neck. Those types were all present. People were shooting heroin… pretty much any shit that you can imagine happening did so over the course of the trip.

Did you keep a record of all the different people who barfed?
The photo installation coincides with a 54,000-word memoir I wrote that has all my anecdotes and stories and conversations from the road. I tried to talk with people when I could, but also keep in mind that I’m a hairy, 230-pound tattoo guy—most of the time people wanted nothing to do with me.
